These buttons are made of Fimo clay, which is a polymer clay. It can be used in a similar manner as plasticine and is hardened in an ordinary oven resulting in colour-fast and machine washable buttons. The technique for making the buttons is similar to the one used in old-fashioned sweet boiling in which the pattern is rolled into long cylinders and subsequently cut in slices.
