The Year in Cross Stitch - 2010

To Håndarbejdets Fremme's great pleasure, the artist Sonia Brandes has created twelve paper cuts for the calendar, The Year in Cross Stitch 2010. Sonia Brandes has cut paper since she was a little girl living on the island of Ærø. It all began with the old Danish Easter custom of "gækkebreve", - letters with cut decorative patterns and an enclosed snowdrop, asking, in poetry, the letter's receiver to guess who the sender might be .... Since then, her refined and often narrative paper cuts have developed into countless decorative projects, pictures, posters, book illustrations, and a beautiful alterpiece for the church in Broby.

Sonia Brandes' fine paper art, "psaligraphy" or drawing by means of scissors, has also been exhibited in many places since her debut in 1971, in Denmark as well as abroad. Sonia Brandes dyes her paper herself and she is always working with scissors only, holding and turning the paper in her hands.

Except from the fine and lovely paper cuts and the accompanying embroidery patterns the calendar also presents 12 photos of stitched models, giving ideas how to mount the embroideries.
